We had a fantastic turnout, with seniors eagerly participating, sharing laughs, and putting their strategic skills to the test. The energy in the room was infectious, and by the end of the event, we were thrilled to receive an invitation to return next month!
Even more exciting, other senior communities have expressed interest in hosting their own poker events, and we’ll be bringing this program to more locations in the coming months. This initiative has truly sparked joy, engagement, and friendly competition among residents.
A Special Shoutout to Tia!
A huge thank you to Tia, the Lifestyles Manager, for making this event possible! Her dedication and coordination made all the difference. Not only did she help organize the event, but she also worked with the community chef to provide refreshments, creating a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all.
We also had a special surprise—Tia’s Executive Director even stepped in to deal some cards! It was terrific to see leadership engaging with residents and making the event even more special.
To ensure that everyone could participate, we had two groups—one for experienced players ready to dive into the action and another for beginners eager to learn the game. Seeing residents of all skill levels engaging, strategizing, and having fun was wonderful!
Community Praise
The enthusiasm for this event was overwhelming, and we were honored to receive such heartwarming feedback:
“This is the biggest turnout for an activity I’ve seen in a while!” – Pacifica Admin Staff
“Can you come back tomorrow? This was very fun!” – Pacifica Resident

Even Tia was impressed with the turnout and the level of engagement from residents! It’s clear that poker is more than just a game—it’s an opportunity for seniors to connect, challenge themselves, and have a great time.
Expanding the Fun: More Casino Games Coming Soon!
Given the excitement and success of this program in bringing seniors together, we’re looking to expand beyond poker and introduce more casino-style games that residents love! In the coming months, we’ll be adding Blackjack, Texas Hold’em, and other favorites to keep the fun going and provide even more opportunities for engagement.
The Many Benefits of Poker for Seniors
Poker is not only entertaining but also an incredible tool for mental stimulation, social connection, and overall well-being. Here’s why it’s such a fantastic activity for seniors:
1. Cognitive Stimulation
Poker requires strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and problem-solving, all of which help keep the brain sharp. Engaging in these mental exercises can enhance cognitive function and may even help delay cognitive decline.
2. Memory Boost
Remembering played cards, tracking opponents’ moves, and recalling strategies all contribute to improved memory retention. Regularly engaging in such activities helps keep memory skills active.
3. Social Connection
One of the most significant benefits of poker is the camaraderie it fosters. Seniors get to enjoy a shared experience, engage in lively conversations, and build meaningful connections—helping to reduce isolation and loneliness.
4. Emotional Resilience
Poker teaches players to handle wins and losses with grace, promoting emotional control and resilience. The ability to manage emotions in a game setting can translate into better emotional well-being in everyday life.
5. Math Skills in Action
Calculating odds, estimating probabilities, and making strategic bets all involve basic mathematical skills. Regular gameplay helps keep numerical thinking sharp, making it a fun way to exercise the brain.

Looking Ahead
Given the enthusiasm and positive feedback, we are excited to continue bringing poker—and soon, more casino games—to senior communities across the area. It’s more than just a game—it’s a fun, engaging, and beneficial way to support cognitive health and social well-being.
Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming events! If your community is interested in hosting a poker or casino night with Interim Healthcare of La Jolla, feel free to reach out—we’d love to bring the fun to you!
